Project Summary
The Isle of Man Ferry Terminal in Liverpool is a major new marine transport hub located at Princes Half Tide Dock on the banks of the River Mersey within Liverpool’s historic docks. Delivered by Sisk in 2024 for the Isle of Man Government (value circa £70.6 m), the terminal supports year-round ferry services between Liverpool and Douglas, and features new road, pedestrian and vehicle-lane links, modern passenger spaces, and heritage-sensitive interventions.
For LCS Civils, the project represented an opportunity to partner with Sisk and undertake the substantial paving, kerbing and civils-scope works that underpin the external infrastructure of the scheme. Working within the broader Sisk-led team, LCS delivered high-quality exterior finishes and civil engineering elements in a complex historic-dock environment.
Project Scope
Working with Sisk on the Ferry Terminal scheme, LCS Civils’ scope included:
- Preparation and installation of extensive paved surfaces (vehicle lanes, pedestrian areas, forecourts) on the terminal site.
- Kerbing work: Forming and installing kerb lines, edge restraints and transitions between paving, carriageways and landscaped zones.
- Civil engineering elements tied into the external infrastructure: site formation, compaction, sub-base and base layers for pavements and lanes, and integration with new road and pedestrian access links.
- Coordination with Sisk’s 3D/4D planning and sequencing to ensure the paving and kerbing works aligned with the digital construction model and programme.
- Working within a heritage-sensitive marine dock environment: excavation and sub-structure work had to respond to newly discovered maritime-heritage artefacts (ancient docks, chambers and access gates) as identified by Sisk’s archaeological collaboration.
- Ensuring that all external civil works tied into the new terminal’s vehicle lanes (1,145 m of lanes noted on the overall scheme) and passenger circulation areas.
LCS Civils’ contribution therefore extended beyond routine paving – it was a key civil infrastructure deliverable supporting the terminal’s external envelope, interfaces and transport-links.
Project Impact
The value of LCS Civils’ involvement is evident on several fronts:
- Enhanced finish and user experience: The quality of the paving, kerbing and external civil works directly contributes to the improved passenger experience at the terminal – new road and pedestrian links elevate connectivity and comfort.
- Supporting regional regeneration: The new terminal enhances transport links between Liverpool and the Isle of Man, contributing to broader regeneration of the docklands and waterfront area. Through the external civil works, LCS helped deliver the “place-making” element of the scheme.
- Heritage & environmental responsibility: Working in the context of the historic dock, LCS Civils’ civil works were executed in harmony with archaeological constraints and sensitive site conditions — underscoring LCS’s competency in complex marine/heritage-adjacent civil engineering.
- Digital construction collaboration: As Sisk adopted 3D/4D planning (modelling sequence, integrating time-phasing) for the project, LCS’s work interfaced with this advanced planning regime — demonstrating that LCS can operate effectively in digitally-driven construction environments.
- Delivering on key metrics: This terminal includes 27,500 sq ft over two floors and 1,145 metres of vehicle lanes. LCS’s external infrastructure work underpins those metrics and therefore plays a measurable role in delivering the scale and performance of the project.
- Stronger reputation and scope expansion: By partnering with Sisk on a £70 m+ infrastructure scheme, LCS Civils reinforces its capability for large-scale infrastructure, paving/kerbing and civils works — strengthening its portfolio for future clients and sectors.
